Thamar Pessel – Hekman

Who is..?

ENTREPRENEUR KENNETH SMIT Since 2017

“My name is Thamar, I am a mother of two children, married and I am a huge horse lover. I live in a rural area in beautiful Kamerik in the middle of the country. I grew up in a family with an enterprising father, and that example has always appealed to me."

My inspiration

I get inspiration from little things. For example, through conversations with friends and my husband. I like to listen to others who think from a different perception.

Favorite place to be

My house, together with my husband and children.

Hobby outside of work

Working with horses gives me a feeling of freedom. A horse also functions as a mirror.

Who is ….?

“My name is Thamar, I am a mother of two children, married and I am a huge horse lover. I live in a rural area in beautiful Kamerik in the middle of the country.
I grew up in a family with an enterprising father, and that example has always appealed to me. After school, I immediately started working in the office at a warehouse automation company. Apart from my passion for horses, I had no idea about my career. I started working to afford my own horse. Although earning money for my horse drove me, I discovered that I really enjoyed contact with customers. I grew within this company and quickly made the switch to field sales. That gave me the feeling of freedom and I more or less ran my own company within an employment contract. After more than 12 years, I transferred to a comparable company where I could use my acquired knowledge. In total, I enjoyed working in warehouse automation for 20 years. After all these years of achieving targets and working hard, I was ready for a new step. I needed to determine my own course and further develop myself. Then I took the step towards a partnership at Kenenth Smit.”

My move to Kenneth Smit began…

“… in 2017. When I had been employed for about 19 years, I felt it was time to take a step. I came into contact with a start-up agency focused on sales training. I investigated this possibility and then called a friend who was already an entrepreneur at Kenneth Smit. He advised me to consider a partnership with Kenneth Smit, because of the strong brand and good programs. I thought the step was too big, so I put the plan aside for the time being. A year later I saw an advertisement from Kenneth Smit for a workshop. That workshop made me interested and convinced that this was the right step and I started the adventure. Working on developing people and working as a self-employed person was a golden combination for me. In addition, there was also a lot of overlap in the work I was already doing, coming up with solutions and being in contact with people. Now I didn't have to sell warehouse automation, but myself.

I strongly believe in Kenneth Smit's method, it is not a pushy method in which you teach participants tricks. The starting point is that participants are authentic and that we make participants aware of their own actions. Based on this, we offer tools to do things differently or even better.

During my first period at Kenneth Smit, I worked a lot on myself and followed many training courses. It sounds so obvious, but I learned to really listen. And thereby discover the question behind the question. It felt good to spend such a period working on yourself and your own development. I also started cold calling outside my own network, not exactly a hobby, but it turned out to be successful. I never expected that 95% of my customers would come from cold calling. It was hard work, the combination of self-development and building your own business. Fortunately, I was successful quite quickly thanks to the support of Kenneth Smit.”

My average work week

“Projects start with conversations with customers, I first map out the question and situation. I speak to several people within the organization and then develop an analysis and proposal. This is always tailor-made and therefore unique for every customer. Such an approach often includes training small groups of employees, but also coaching or the use of assessments, for example. Contacting customers and developing proposals and analyzes takes me one day a week. I train both online and physically, on average 2 to 3 days a week. I spend the rest of my time on: acquisition, administration and preparing training. I interact with fellow entrepreneurs every week. If I have been to a potential customer and do not feel a connection, I sometimes transfer customers to colleagues. Because a good click is important to make such a collaboration a success. As colleagues we help each other and keep each other sharp. There is a culture in which we give each other feedback in a pleasant way and look at where improvements can be made.

Many of my clients are in the IT sector and I focus on both management and sales. In my work I often come into contact with project managers, consultants and service engineers. Because I originally come from a technical field, I feel at home in this industry.”

What Kenneth Smit brings me

“It has brought me a lot of fun work! In addition, I have been able to develop myself strongly within Kenneth Smit and it has given me a lot of self-confidence and self-insight.”

My most beautiful Kenneth Smit moment

"The most enjoyable part of my work is when the participants make a positive impression. Then I hear a participant say, for example: “I have been working with this customer for months and have not made any progress in all that time. Now I ask different questions and suddenly it works." That gives me enormous satisfaction.”

When are you a real Kenneth Smitter?

“A real Kenneth Smitter is a go-getter, someone who keeps going when things go wrong and loves hard work. You must be able to empathize with a customer, be empathetic and focused on your own development.”
