Dealing with the media remains quite exciting for many. This is not surprising at all, because journalists do not always have the same objectives as you. However: journalists do need you. You ensure that they get their content to fill their newspaper, website, etc. In this blog we give 5 tips on how to deal with interviews.

 1. Don't be surprised

If you receive an unexpected call from a journalist and you are not prepared for this, ask if you can call back at a later time. From that moment on, you are in control. Don't wait a week before calling back, but get started right away.

2. Formulate a core message

Formulate a core message that you want to convey during the interview. A core message should not be too long-winded. Keep it short and sweet, but tell a complete story. Make sure that colleagues who have contacts with the press are aware of the core message.

3. Be honest

During the interview, tell the truth and be honest. Everything you say will be recorded and written down and most likely published. The media always has sources available to check your story.

4. Pay attention to your non-verbal communication

Body language is also very important in an interview. Especially if you are filmed doing so. Think about what attitude you want to adopt. If necessary, practice this in advance in front of the mirror or with a colleague. Using the correct words and intonation is also important.

5. End the conversation gracefully

No matter how the interview goes, always make sure you end the conversation with the journalist on a nice note. You may see him/her more often in the future. Thank the journalist for his/her time. Finally, you can ask the journalist if you can view the publication in advance. When this option is available, you can check the piece for inaccuracies. And then you know exactly what is published in the media.
